What is Marine Biology?
Marine Biology is the scientific study of plants and animals that live in salt water. It is closely linked to the studies of oceanography and marine geology. With it being covered in 70% of water, a very large portion of life on Earth lives in the ocean.
Marine Biologists aim to understand how ocean currents, depths, and light levels affect the distribution and populations of marine life. Specfic habitats studied include coral reefs, kelp forests, and seagrass meadows.
Life in the ocean (besides its plant life) can range from the largest whale to the most microscopic plankton. Marine Biologists can hope to see rat fishes, squids, orcas, dead billionaires, and even fungi!
